AFAM Chairman
THOMAS MATHEW
Thomas was elected as Chairman of the Airfreight Forwarders Association of Malaysia (2019) (AFAM) for a three-year term beginning in June 2024. With over 40 years of experience in logistics, courier, and airfreight forwarding, he has been an active contributor to the industry, working alongside past AFAM leadership to address key challenges and contribute to Malaysia’s logistics landscape.
His career in the industry began in 1983 with Courier Air Express International (CAEI), which later became Purolator Courier under Asian Courier System (ACS) and was eventually acquired by United Parcel Service (UPS). Over the course of two decades at UPS, he held diverse leadership roles both locally and regionally, culminating in his tenure as Managing Director of UPS Jetair Express India. His responsibilities spanned operations, security, hub, warehouse management, industrial engineering, customs brokerage, airline operations, and international joint ventures, providing him with a well-rounded understanding of the complexities of domestic and global logistics landscape.
Expanding his expertise beyond Malaysia, Thomas spent a decade in the United Arab Emirates, serving as Regional Director at National Air Cargo Dubai before establishing Nexis Aviation FZE in Sharjah. He played a key role in managing process improvement and ISO compliance across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific for National Air Cargo and led charter operations for Nexis Aviation, specializing in aircraft leasing and cargo charters for the movement of goods to Iraq and Afghanistan during the NATO and US missions following the Iraq war.
Upon returning to Malaysia in 2015, he leveraged his international experience to establish and manage companies in airfreight, sea freight, and express small package logistics.
Thomas holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Irish International University, London, UK.
With extensive experience spanning both local and international markets, he is uniquely positioned to advocate for industry best practices, policy improvements, and regulatory advancements. His leadership at AFAM focuses on fostering collaboration with government ministries, agencies, and industry stakeholders to enhance service quality, legislation, efficiency, and sustainability in Malaysia’s logistics sector, ensuring its continued growth in an increasingly competitive domestic and global market.
Beyond his professional achievements, Thomas remains passionate about innovation, learning, and technology, constantly seeking ways to improve efficiency and drive positive change. He believes in leading with integrity, humility, and a deep commitment to doing what is right—values that continue to guide his journey in shaping the future of Malaysia’s logistics industry.
